Flutissimo
Last Sunday the Richland Hills congregation was treated to a concert by the flute orchestra called “Flutissimo.” It was wonderful! Some of the more memorable selections for me were “Plains and Petticoats” by Nancy Wood. Ms. Wood took excerpts from the diaries of women who crossed the plains to settle in Texas and put them to music played by an assortment of flutes. After the diary readings by Jeanene Craig, Flutissimo made the stories come alive musically. One could actually visualize wagons rolling, buffalo grazing, campfire dancing and of course Comanche Indians! I kept looking for the large cinema screen because it felt like we were in the movie theater.
Flutissimo consists of 27 flutists, two of which belong to RHUMC, Janice Spooner and her daughter Denise Buckner. The concerts are free and the orchestra sells musical compact discs to support their performances. The CDs are ten dollars each, if you would like to purchase one, contact Phil Silvernail the “sound guy.”
Finally, I would end with a quote by J. Craig: "Of all the wind instruments, the flute can do the most things the most easily. A fine performer on a flute can dash up a scale and down again so quickly that our ears cannot separate the notes. A flutist can skip and jump from note to note so lightly that the music reminds us of the quickness of a rabbit or of a gazelle. She can swoop and turn and trill the notes until we think that we are hearing a bird. Musicians say that a flute can do anything!"
After attending a Flutissimo concert you will believe it!
Shalom,
Howard

RHUMC is a Stephen Ministry Congregation
Stephen Ministers can provide.....a listening ear, a hand to hold, an arm around a
shoulder, comfort when you're really lonely. We never expect the hard times to
come. Sometimes burdens which were once light become too heavy for us to handle
alone. Unexpected illness catches us without a support system. Death of a loved one throws
a life out of balance. It happens to everyone at some point. Stephen Ministers are trained in
Christ-centered caring, and are available to help in tough times. Contact a pastor or a Stephen
Leader for more information.
UM General Conference - Closing Worship
United Methodists must live with a spirit of abundance and not scarcity as they go into the world, the new president of the Council of Bishops told delegates on May 2, at the closing worship of the 2008 General Conference. It is “incumbent on you and me as people of Christian faith that we not become stingy with the blessings—stingy with what we have received from God,” said Bishop Gregory Palmer in his sermon to close the denomination’s top legislative assembly.
Palmer, who leads the church’s Iowa
Area, was installed as president of the council on April 26. “Naked we came into
this world,” he said. “We brought nothing with us, and we will take nothing with
us. Everything we have—every good and perfect gift, comes from God. “I am
more hopeful for the church tonight than I have ever been because I am more
vulnerable than I have ever been, and I need to depend more on the Holy Ghost
than I have ever depended on the Holy Ghost,” he said. “Lord except you help us
by your spirit we haven’t a got a chance.” Palmer’s sermon closed the April 23-
May 2 assembly shortly before midnight.

Celebration of Women ~ Sunday, May 11 Mother’s Day |
M - O - T - H - E - R
"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold,
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
"MOTHER!"
A word that means the world to me.

Wesleyan Homes Offering
May 11 is the annual Mother’s Day Offering for the Wesleyan Homes Benevolent Fund. This offering is the primary way to help insure that the Wesleyan Homes which show compassion and hospitality for the elders in Central Texas continue to receive residents regardless of their ability to pay. In 2007, over $90,000 of benevolent support was given to residents of our Retirement Homes and $1,320,000 to our Nursing Homes. No one has ever been turned away from Wesleyan Homes because of their inability to pay. The offering on Sunday will help insure this policy with rising health care costs.
